The Spades – Learnin’ The Hard Way

20th Ann. Edition LP
Learning The Hard Way is the first album by The Spades and in 2022 it will be 20 years since this semi-classic, groundbreaking album by The spades was first released. To celebrate this, the album is now being released on vinyl for the very first time ever. And when we do it, we do it right: colored 180 gram vinyl in a beautiful gatefold sleeve.

Hailing from the gutters of Eindhoven Rockcity Area in the Netherlands… The Spades! They look like the “good old m*therfuckers” of the Afro-American cult band Bad Brains. But they sound different. Although there are definitely some vulgar punk and hard rock influences in their music, The Spades are more specialized in producing a dirty, fat, uncompromising loud hard punk rock ‘n roll sound.

In the year of release, The Spades grew into one of the most notorious bands in the country. In this context, you should definitely read the book Hart Tegen Hart by Leon Verdonschot, for which he won the Pop Pers Prize in 2005, about his adventures with Denvis cs on a European tour. Suburban Records label boss Ronald Drayer about The Spades: “Those were wild times at the time, but everything up until then degenerated into a coffee party after we signed The Spades: from angry club owners who called us that The Spades had taken the entire mixing desk after their performance, to fights on stage, to a furious tour manager of the UK Subs (not ideal sons-in-law either) who was driven mad by Denvis because he stuck his genitals in Charlie Harper’s face at every opportunity, to concerned parents after seeing a report about The Spades at Paaspop and so on for half an hour… In terms of marketing, they also had some special ideas, as evidenced by the knuckle duster with the logo of The Spades in mirror image.” But let’s not forget that these guys also made some really good garage punk, straight outta Stratumseind.

The English music magazine Kerrang! wrote in their 5 star review “These boys mean business and business is mean! Your collection needs this album almost as much as anyone who crosses the Spades needs a dentist!”

Suburban Records

At Suburban Records, we believe that all great music has one thing in common: soul. Soul has the unique ability to communicate happiness, love, sorrow, and anger — all the essential qualities that distinguish an average song from a unique one. When we sign new artists, we look for that soul in their songs and sound, as well as in the stories they tell. Within these parameters, we give our artists total creative freedom, which we consider essential.
